While I make it a key point in my Contract as well as in person to state that if you do Not or can No longer take care of your rats from me I will take them back. I never ask questions but ask that they come with their items and cage, why? Because I don't want to use my cages when taking back rats I already sold, I not only have to use my items but I have to wash things multiple times before and after use because of the risk of transferring illnesses. I do not use bleach, it's a fear of mine to use it and have something happen to my rats or other pets; so in turn I use vinegar or for more intense cleaning I use backing soda, soaps etc. So cleaning can be a bit of a task because I use uncommon tricks, but cleaning a cage and items for use of new incomes and then cleaning them after and still using them. If I can't use the items after then I have to give them away with the returns or throw them away, costing me money I can not make back and using extra money on rats not of my constant care.
My point is, if you return a rat their donated items will go with them when they get adopted out and I charge NOTHING for those items they go free with the animals. I make 0% profit on returned rats, I charge $20 a rat which covers the cost of Topical medication as a precaution of bugs spading to my other rats or animals, it also covers fresh food I put into them and any medication. I keep all returns for 2 weeks before rehoming them, but when I get wind of a return I go though my list and email those who wish to adopt from me. I disclose all information regarding the returns to the new owners and then move foreword with adoption.
It is a pain to do this, and lucky me I have only had this happen 3 times in my breeding years. But none-the-less its hard to handle when it is so aggravating! As a rat owner you should think about your animals! Not even just a rat owner but as an animal caretaker you are the soul caretaker for the animal and to just dump it off for a new job or new home? I will continue to take returns as it is my policy, I do this because I love and care about my animals regardless if they are adopted out.
To clients who return, I understand life happens, but at least understand the time and money I then have to put back into these rats if you give me nothing for them..
