What do we breed?
I often get the question, "What varieties do you breed?". I have neglected until this page to show and tell our clients and or new clients what we breed.
I as a rattery owner are striving to breed genetically stronger rats, trying to make them resistant to cancer and the mycoplasma. I hope to do this with out altering the genes or using medications/drugs, I am trying to breed rats that are more resistant to cancer cell generation. By selective breeding I plan to one day have a rats more likely to be resistant to cancer, this would improve the over all longevity of the rats life. Mostly this would be more beneficial to the females seeing and the risk of cancer is higher in them vs the males.

Standard:
We often work with this fur type as we love the familiarity of it. AFRMA (American Fancy Rat And Mouse Association) Standard: The coat to be short, smooth, and glossy with the males having somewhat longer and coarser hair. It should show a natural high shine and densely cover the body. Colour to conform to a recognized colour or pattern. |
Dumbo:
We work with this variety often, we Love the stock, cute and firm look of this variety. AFRMA Standard: Dumbo rats to be shown in any recognized colour, marking, or variety. The distinguishing feature being their low ear set. The ears are large and round, set low on the sides of the head. Head to form an equilateral triangle when viewed from above. NFRS (National Fancy Rat Society) Standard: The ears to be set low on the sides of the head, their base at the back of the cheeks wider and more open than a standard rat. The ear is slightly furled at the top and should stand out at a prominent angle from the head. The ear may appear to be rose petal shaped, but should be perfectly rounded and as flat as possible. Head shape to follow the standard for normal eared rats, though may appear to differ due to the ear position. A prominent occiput (back of skull) is normal but should not present a 'hunchback' appearance. Faults: creased, bent and wrinkled ears, ears being too narrow and pointed and tubular rather than rounded. Serious faults: Dome skulls, fore shortened head, misplaced or small eyes to be judged as a serious fault. |
Rex:
We have just started to work/own rex and are looking foreword to having our first litter (December2014). AFRMA Standard: The coat to be evenly dense and not excessively harsh, with as few guard hairs as possible. Coat to be evenly curled and also to a lesser extent on the belly. Curly vibrissae (whiskers) are normal for Rex. Color to conform to a recognized color or pattern. NFRS Standard: The coat to be evenly dense and not excessively harsh, with as few guard hairs as possible. Coat to be evenly curled and also to a lesser extent on the belly. Curly vibrissae (whiskers) are normal for Rex. Colour to conform to a recognised colour or pattern variety. Where Silver or ticked rats are rexed, allowances should be made for the lower number of guard hairs present than in normal varieties. *Rex's have been known to go through a molt at about 4-5 weeks of age which can cause them to lose some or all of their hair.* |
